BOILERS for PROCESS PACKAGES.
Boilers are a type of Process Packages. Steam Generators & Boilers are commonly used in this subcategory. One of the key distinctions to define is Steam Generators & Boilers versus Heaters. Steam Generators and Boilers both generate water vapor, whereas Heaters raise the temperature of either a thermal fluid or super-heated water which, due to very high pressure, does not actually vaporize and does not create vapor. Fire and water tube boilers cover all kinds of fuels, whether solid, liquid, or gaseous. Biomass is the only fuel kept separate, since it is quite different compared to the usual coal-, oil-, or gas-fueled types. The division between heaters and boilers is based on what is being heated; a direct-fired heater can heat air, water, or thermal fluid. For WHBs, HRSGs and WHRUs, the classification is based on the source from which heat is being recovered; for example, a WHRU might recover heat from super-heated water coming from a turbine process. Boilers can usually be seen as operating at sub-critical pressures, since water does reach its boiling point, while Steam Generators more often operate at super-critical pressures, so the water vaporizes instantly and changes state without boiling. This is the practical distinction that will be followed to differentiate the two systems from each other. a. Steam generators = no boiling, water changes straight to vapor b. Boilers = boiling is allowed to occur due to sub-critical pressures Fire Tube Boilers have hot gases inside the tubes and water outside the tubes. They are typically internally fired, operate at lower pressure, and are generally not suitable for large power plants. Water Tube Boilers have water inside the tubes and hot gases outside the tubes. They are externally fired, operate at high pressure, and are suitable for large power plants.
