AUTOMATION for INSTRUMENTATION.
Automation is a type of Instrumentation. In the context of instrumentation, automation refers to systems and devices that manage, command and regulate the behaviour of other devices, machines and processes. Integrated control and safety systems combine control and safety functions in separate components that are integrated both physically and through programming. Often, the term integrated indicates systems that are distinct yet based on the same technology or share high?level interfaces, and there is a trend toward procuring integrated solutions in new projects. In retrofit or revamp projects, it is more common for systems to be purchased separately. Distributed control systems, sometimes referred to as process control systems or basic process control systems, form one element of automation. Safety instrumented systems are associated with emergency shutdown functions, and within integrated systems, fire?and?gas detection, emergency shutdown and emergency depressurization are treated as functions rather than separate systems. Process shutdown systems are considered a level within the broader category of emergency shutdown systems. Structural monitoring systems also fall under this subcategory; they monitor stress, environmental conditions and other parameters. Some specialised control systems and instrumentation are classified under packagesfor example, flow?meter skids and metering systemsreflecting their process?oriented nature.
