DERRICK / MAST, a type of DRILLING EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS.
Derrick / Mast are a type of Drilling Equipment and Materials. In drilling operations the derrick or mast serves as the structural support for the rig and does not include the equipment mounted on it, such as hoists and winches. It is part of a broader grouping of materials used on onshore and offshore drilling rigs that also includes well safety equipment to mitigate disruptive events (excluding blow?out preventers and items under process control and safety or relief valves), auxiliary drilling equipment like electromagnetic and hydromatic brakes, drum or disc brakes, air clutches, catheads and pulsation dampeners, and land blow?out preventers (offshore versions are classed under subsea equipment). Other subcategories cover drilling instrumentation, bottom?hole assembly components such as floating subs, lifting subs, Z?over subs and bit subs along with reamers, hole?openers, stabilisers and shock tools, as well as hoists and winches comprising deadline anchors, travelling blocks, crown blocks, sheaves, swivels, hooks, hoist supports, mobile hoists and winches. Handling tools (backsavers, safety stands, clamps, stabbing guides, tongs, bushings, slips and elevators) and joints and fittings like swivel joints and hammer valves are catalogued separately, and hammers themselves form another subcategory. Engines and generators for drilling and pumps for drilling mud or hydrocarbon fluids reside in other equipment groups.
